Saturday surveys: Your own private garden

Though my plants never do so well, I do at least technically have a balcony garden. Do you grow any of your own food?

  1. tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce, swiss chard, beets, radishes, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, passion fruit, alpine strawberries, sweet potatoes, lemons (well, not yet, just planted the tree), raspberries (none yet), scallions, basil, thyme, mint, parsley, a bunch of other herbs I’m not remembering right now. This is the first year I’ve grown much since leaving home but I’m sure we’ll have more next year.

Oh, and we get the neighbors’ grapes, figs, avocados, and loquats hanging over the walls into our garden.

I voted the second option (because we’re nowhere near self-sufficient) although I suppose somewhere between the first and second would be more accurate.

When I was growing up my family actually was largely self-sufficient in terms of fruits & veggies for six months out of the year. (apples, peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, persimmons, figs, blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries, grapes, strawberries, carrots, beets, lettuce, corn, pumpkins, tomatoes, beans, eggplant, bell peppers, sunflowers, melons, rhubarb, cucumbers, zucchini, lemons, tangerines, limes, grapefruit, onions, potatoes, etc.)

  2. Looks like 3/4 of readers at least grow a lil something! A pretty good start :)

    I wish I had a fruit tree –
