Literal shit, from mice. Check out this video in which Union Square (NYC) Starbucks employees talk about how they find mice frolicking in your pastries, day after day.
The video was uploaded today, so I can’t, as of yet, find any news outlets I trust verifying these reports.
But if the peeps in the video are honest Starbucks workers, we’re talking “consistent, long term insect and rodent infestation” and cockroaches crawling through espresso machines.
Gross!!! (via Starbucks Gossip)
Update, 8/17/06: New York Daily News reports “Out of the 201 Starbucks stores in the city, the Department of Health issued notices of violation to 44 for rodent or insect activity in the most recent round of inspections, city records show.”

Ummmm…then why aren’t they working harder to clean better so that these rodents don’t crawl all over the food, instead of doing these sorts of press releases? It’s not like outsiders found out about this first. It’s their responsibility to make sure that there aren’t bugs and rodents crawling all over everything, right? If they were good employees, then they would clean extra good to make sure they don’t have rodents LIVING in their cabinets! I’m more disgusted with the workers who wouldn’t do anything about these problems. Having worked in the food industry, I know that these problems don’t happen in clean areas…only when people get lazy and don’t clean things thoroughly.
How is this a Starbucks problem, and not an employee problem? If they want me to support their unionization, then I need to see some proof that they’re actually doing work worthy of higher wages.
And, how are you then not promoting the increased use of harsh chemicals that are ruining our environment?

doesn’t Starbucks have its own “health inspectors” that are supposed to be above and beyond the governments? also, just to remind everyone, it’s New York City. rats in your pastries aren’t that shocking…

Gillian — The workers’ claim’s that they’re consistently understaffed and underequipped to take care of these issues. The NY Daily News piece is informative, in terms of giving actual #s of Starbucks’ that’re not so clean. I also don’t really get your imaginative leap into promoting the use of harsh chemicals — Pls explain what you mean there –
Anon — I don’t know if Starbucks has its own health inspectors, but the Dept. of Health sure does — and they’ve given 44 of 201 Starbucks in NYC notices of violation for rodent or insect activity in the most recent round of inspections….
