For the first time ever, L.A.’s getting a Fair Trade Pop-Up Store in time for the holidays — but only for a week. The Garment Worker Center, a nonprofit that fights sweatshops in the L.A. area, will showcase both fair trade gifts from around the world and affordable gifts made using fair labor in L.A. at a temporary shop in the Garment District!
When: Thurs., Dec. 4 – Dec. 11. Detailed hours at garmentworkercenter.org.
Where: 1250 S. Los Angeles St., Los Angeles.
There’ll be handmade silk purses from a women’s cooperative in Cambodia and and recycled paper
bowls from Vietnam, among other great gifts. Plus, all proceeds from the store will benefit the Garment Worker Center.
And on Dec. 4, the opening day, Garment Worker Center will have its Holiday Fair Trade Sale, dubbed Shop with a Heart 2008. Support fair trade and fair labor while mingling with like-minded activists. Tickets for the reception event — honoring exiting Executive Director Kimi Lee and the Bet Tzedek Employment Rights Project — start at $15.
