If you saw Sicko and think others should too, here’s an event you can get behind: A fundraiser to bring Sicko to the people.
Basically, for just $20, you can watch Sicko, hear a post-screening discussion, and eat free hors d’ouvres — plus know that net proceeds’ll go to buy Sicko tickets for “individuals outside the demographic of people who would normally see the film or who live in districts whose legislator voted against SB840.” For $50, you get reserved seating and wine with that –
When: Monday, July 23, 2007, at 7 pm
Where: Regency Fairfax Cinemas, 7907 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles
What: Free screening, post-screening discussion, plus hors d’ouvres
Cost: $20 for general admission; $50 for VIP tix with reserved seating and free wine.
Speakers for the discussion include:
* Cynthia Campbell: A California nurse who was dropped by Blue Cross when she was diagnosed with cancer. Her husband has been picketing outside their headquarters with a banner that reads “Please Don’t Kill My Wife.”
* Dawnelle Keyes: featured in the film SICKO, Dawnelle’s 18 month old daughter died after being refused treatment because the closest hospital wasn’t preauthorized by Kaiser.
* Emily Gold: LA field rep for Senator Sheila Kuehl, author of SB840.
* Dr. Jo Olson: Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party, Chair of the Healthcare plank for the CDP Platform Committee and Adolescent Medicine Physician.
Reserve tix by paypaling your money to ActivistsforAction@hotmail.com; those who want to pay at the door can RSVP by emailing ActivistsforAction@hotmail.com, but the event could sell out via paypal ticket sales.
Update, 8/21/08: SB 840’s coming up for vote in the state assembly for reals now! Take action!
