Back in June, a Starbucks Week of Action tried to get Starbucks to stop using cow pus-infused milk (aka rBGH milk) in their stores. Now, the action’s back!
Tomorrow’s the Starbucks National Call-In Day, organized by Food and Water Watch. The action’s simple: All you gotta do is call Starbucks (800.235.2883) on December 5, then tell Starbucks to hold the hormones and switch to rBGH-free milk.
What you’re likely to hear, according to Jennifer at Food and Water Watch, who’s gotten feedback from some early callers: Starbucks will say stores already offer organic (therefore rbgh-free) milk.
What the phone rep won’t mention: Only customers who specifically request organic milk — AND pay an extra charge — get organic milk. That, combined with the fact that Starbucks doesn’t publicize the policy, means that many employees — let alone consumers — don’t even know about the policy. The result: Even when a customer has the wherewithal to request organic milk, it’s often not available.
That’s just not good ’nuff, sez Food & Water Watch, and I agree. What this call-in day asks for is that Starbucks buy ONLY rBGH-free milk, thus providing it to every customer who gets a milky drink.
To inspire you to call in tomorrow, check out some cute lil pics from a lil dress rehearsal the Food and Water Watch staff did to prep for the DC Starbucks National Call-In Day event.
If you happen to be in DC tomorrow, you’ll see a half-dozen dairy cows at a Starbucks store not too far from the national mall and the White House, asking customers to call in :) Hey EWG peeps — can you report back if you see ‘em?
Update, 12/5/06: I called — and it sounds like Starbucks might start moving on this. You gotta call too though –

pus-infused milk
Urrg that does not sound right. Thank god I don’t drink coffee and have to frequent these places.
