Answer: In your question, I see a cool benefit to having a boss: Taking part in an eco-consultation and benefiting from it — without having to pay for it yourself! :)

If your boss is willing to put in the time, I highly recommend Sustainable Works’ Green Living Workshops. For a minimal fee ($25 for Santa Monica residents, $50 for L.A. residents), this Santa Monica-funded nonprofit will take would-be environmentalists through a 6-week program covering everything from water conservation to food. Visit Sustainable Works‘ website to find out when the next workshop series begins.

As for individual consultations: For a one-time dealio, contact my friend Traci Reitz, Community Sustainability Liaison for the City of Santa Monica, tracireitz@me.com tracireitz@me.com. Be aware, however, that she only does single consultations — no long-term projects.

For a more flexible consultant, try Green Life Guru — who offer both a Green Home Makeover and Home Energy Makeover, among other greening services. I met these dudes briefly at a Green Business Networking event, and while I haven’t used their services, they come highly recommended from other friends of mine.

For serious remodel LEED type projects, try Pam Cepe, LEED consultant at REthink Development.

Keep in mind that all my recommendations above come through myself and my friends — and are by no means a comprehensive list of green home consulting options in the LA area. Nor am I’m not claiming that the above are the “best” options for this work.
