 Sunday solutions: Paper towels, again

Question: I was wondering if we can put paper towels in the green recycle bins? Thank you, Shari.

  2. I’ve begun using cloth napkins, too, instead of paper napkins or paper towels.

  3. As far as I know, paper towels can be put into the compost if they haven’t been exposed to cleaning products. So, if you used a paper towel to wipe up soup spilled on the counter, then it can be composted. But if you used the paper towel to clean your sink with bleach-based cleaner, then it shouldn’t be composted. (in other words, if the absorbed material is safe for worms and other compost bugs, it’s OK.)

To reduce my paper use, I made a collection of “rustic” napkins from a hopelessly stained shirt. I keep a collection at work for office lunches, in a container at the dinner table, and elsewhere. I throw them into the wash with my kitchen towels.

  4. I hate paper towels. We have not had them in the house for nearly 2 years. I take cloth napkins to work for lunch…and people think I am a little nuts..lol

Oh and my Aunt came for Thanksgiving dinner, and kinda freaked because we did not have any paper products. lol

  5. I banned paper towels from our house with much kicking and screaming from the rest of the family and somehow they all survived! I got the white mechanics rags from Costco (like cheap wash cloths) and we reuse them and wash them. Do not miss paper towels at all! And we use cloth napkins for meals.

  6. I lucked out and found loads of napkins at Vintage Values (its and used shop that donates it proceeds to domestic violence).

  7. I’m guessing the towel belongs to the photographer — Follow the link to contact bluemodern via Flickr if you’re really curious :)

Marc — “Rustic” is a nice descriptor for, you know, rugs :) If you follow the link in the post, you’ll notice it mentions the composting option — but your info about making sure not to put chemical-soaked paper towels into the compost is a good one :)

I think getting rid of paper towels is something you can quickly adjust to — and a gift that keeps on giving — the money you were basically throwing straight into the trash can be spent in better ways :)
