The Sustainable Business Council’s back, this time with a panel discussion titled “Sustainability: The Media and The Message.” As usual, there’ll be shmoozing pre and post event over food and drinks, free after the $20 cover –
When: Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Where: Livingreen, 10000 Culver Blvd. Culver City
Cost: $20. RSVP here.
I’m guessing a discussion on greenwashing will ensue, as the description says this:
The media controls the message. But how effectively is the message being communicated? And how are the media influencing our decisions and values as consumers and citizens?
Does the media really control the message? Maybe I was just got too much post-modernist theory drilled into me in grad school, then spent too much time mucking around in web 2.0 – 3.0, but I don’t think the direction of power’s so unidirectional and monolithic as that….
Anyway — Panelists include Dave Metzler of Free Range Media, my friend Michael Dannenberg of Good Inc. — plus a consultant and a PR and marketing dude. I won’t be there because I’ll be at an LA blogger meet-up put together by Caroline on Crack, but gimme a recap if you go –

The media does control the message, but not so much the mainstream media. Bloggers like you have a profound impact on public opinion, and it is these smaller sources that are preaching a better message than the larger channels.
