Swimming to school, from San Pedro to Long Beach

Posted by Siel in de-car-ing (Tuesday October 2, 2007 at 2:53 pm)

This girl has a lot in common with me — We’re both 28-year-old grad students — except she can swim a helluva lot farther. Sierra Brown swam 11 miles from Ports O’ Call Village to Long Beach, then walked a mile to campus for her art critique class.

The swim’s part of a project for her thesis. Every Monday for 8 weeks, Sierra’ll get to school via a different mode of human-powered transportation.

“I wanted to do this to raise questions about our infrastructure,” said Brown, who would like to see more tax money for bike paths and other forms of public transportation.

Wondering what the 7 other methods’ll be –

  1. For the next few weeks, Brown will make the 16-mile journey through Wilmington by bike, in-line skates, Razor scooter and jogging.

She’ll also paddle on a longboard in the water, sail and finish the project with a mystery commute on Nov. 19.

  2. I always thought it was too dangerous to swim the harbor–not because of water quality, but because of all those ships and barges. I guess she’s staying safe by swimming near the breakwater.

Ya know, everyone says that nobody swims in Long Beach, but that’s just not true!

  3. I’ve never gone more than 1/2 mile in the ocean, so color me impressed!

And congrats on the Emerald City blog in the L.A. Times, Siel! I’m glad you’ll be getting an even wider audience.
