The Bag rule: green LA girl lays it down

2922294455 4549049d3b m The Bag rule: green LA girl lays it downGot a reusable bag? Reuse it! Unsurprisingly, reusable bags aren’t actually green unless you reuse them! The same goes for reusable mugs, chopsticks, etc. Simply stockpiling reusable stuff does not an environmentalist make –

Which is to say: From now on, if you enter freebie drawings with red flag comments like “I am a reusuable bag junkie..lol..I will never have enough,” you will be automatically disqualified from said drawings.

The reason I give away tote bags: I already have enough of them, and firmly believe that yes, one can indeed have enough tote bags and should know when to say enough. So it does peeve me a bit when some readers seem to have a black hole or something into which they throw reusable bags and keep asking for more….

Even “I’m always looking for more grocery tote bags!,” and “I love tote bags and I collect them” are really toeing the line….

We all need to work on changing the “It’s free? I’ll take 2!” attitude of consumer culture, yes? Let’s work on that via the freebies too.

I do also wanna add that I’m aware I’m preaching to the choir for the most part here :) In fact, I’ve had many readers ask me if they can donate cool eco stuff they have but don’t need themselves for me to give away as a freebie.

In fact, when reader Emily came by to pick up the Brita faucet filter she won, she asked if she could give me — you guessed it — a new reusable tote bag she got during Bike to Work week. That’ll come up as a freebie soon :)

In the meantime, go out and do likewise in your communities :P Share the stuff you don’t need!

In other baggy news: Sheryl Crow’s designed a reusable tote bag (top image) for Whole Foods. Made from 80% post-consumer plastic bottles, the bags’ll go on sale Oct. 15 for just 79 or 99 cents each, depending on the size. Get one — but only if you need one, and actually plan to use and reuse it :)

  4. My mom is one of those bag-a-holics…it drives me nuts!! She brings home free reusable bags in heaploads and leaves them in the garage for when she ‘might’ need them. Great post! I’ll be forwarding this to her!!

  5. I’m still using the “I’m not a plastic bag” I won from you earlier this year. In fact, its used almost every other day at the store or farmers market. Its very light and very compact.
