3586670668 49cab30ceb m The End of the Line and Whale Wars (plus a free fish film screening!)World Ocean Day happens June 8 — and you can celebrate it by catching a free movie!  The End Of The Line, an environmental documentary about the effects of overfishing narrated by Ted Danson, hits theaters this month.

If you’re already a Seafood Watch wallet card-carrying environmentalist, you’ll know about some of the issues in The End of the Line: Collapsing fisheries, imminent extinction of fish species, potential for human starvation. The film puts all these issues together — while taking you everywhere from Senegal to Tokyo — then proposes solutions to this international problem that, according to the film’s website, are “simple and doable,” but require “political will and activism.”

Find a screening near you. If you go to the free L.A. screening , you’ll even get free drinks and hors d’oeuvres! Just make sure you RSVP to events@ioe.ucla.edu for the June 8 event, happening from 6 pm – 9 pm at UCLA (Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall). If you can’t make it to a screening, The End of the Line opens at Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills June 19.

In other fishy news, the second season of Animal Planet’s  Whale Wars debuts this week. The documentary series features the sometimes-dangerous clashes between the Japanese whaling program and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: “Collisions at sea, harrowing nautical maneuvers, a near-death experience in an ice field and more aggressive Japanese defenses against the Sea Shepherds — including the use of Long Range Acoustical Devices (LRADs), sonic devices that cause intense pain and could cause permanent hearing damage” are among the crazy events you’ll see this season. Below’s a preview:

How did whales take center stage in these environmental wars? Back in 1986, Japan agreed to the International Whaling Commission’s moratorium on commercial whaling — but then started what the country calls a scientific program to assess whale stocks — a program Sea Shepherds argue is illegal commercial whaling.

Find out more about the controversy, then tune in to Animal Planet this Friday, June 5 at 9 pm to catch the season premier of Whale Wars.
