The Futon Shop’s gone green?

When I first read “peace, love & green” on an ad for Futon Shop in LA Weekly, I thought green stood for money — since the ad boasted a “20% off everything sale” too. But no — I found a lil nod to Mother Earth in the bottom left corner of the ad, and decided to investigate.

Sure enough — Futon Shop has gone a pale shade of green, putting together a nice lil page on their website boasting the eco-friendliness of a number of products.

Now some of the stuff’s actually pretty cool! We’re talking recycled cotton futon mattresses made from denim. The queen costs just $103.96.

You can also get a 100% organic cotton futon mattress, $399.96 for a queen. Baby crib mattresses come in 100% cotton too.

The other eco-claims for wool, memory foam, and relex bounce foam aren’t so convincing for me. No, Futon Shop isn’t talking about eco-harvested, non-chemically treated wool — It’s talking conventional wool, saying that “wool has filled our lives with comfort and warmth for thousands of years.” That may be, but what about the insecticides, pesticides, and chemicals used in conventional wool today?

Still, I’m pretty psyched that we have recycled futon mattresses at a reasonable price! Onward –
