The last Oprah I watched was the Pontiac giveaway show — which left me with mixed feelings. I’d love for people’s dreams to come true — I just wonder if simply giving people more consumer goods is the solution to all this.
Easy for me to say — cuz I have a working car. But still…
Enter Kenny, an eighth grade science teacher in Long Island, with a different kind of dream. Kenny — better known as “Mr. Luna” — is trying to get Oprah to give every child in america one compact fluorescent lightbulb. “It won’t cost Oprah a penny,” Kenny says, “corporate sponsors will do that.”
Why Oprah? I asked. Kenny: “I want to use this to great huge public awareness of environmental issues in this country, and Oprah is the exact forum to do it. She’s already had DiCaprio on a month or two ago to talk about global warming, and encouraged people to “go buy these bulbs” — this is just the next step for her, with great public image results for herself.”
If Oprah takes Kenny’s suggestions, carbon emissions would be lowered, and billions of dollars would be saved: $2.3 billion, by Kenny’s estimates (50 million kids/bulbs x $46 in electricity costs saved per bulb).
Wanna join this people’s movement? Go over to Kenny’s site, and copy & paste a letter to Oprah. Maybe it’ll turn daytime TV green this year.
