The dead vs. fake debate’s over. Finally, Los Angeles has its own rent-a-tree service, thanks to the The Living Christmas Co., a company that’ll deliver a locally-grown, live tree to your doorstep — in a biodiesel truck, no less!
The Torrance-based company offers five different types of trees of various sizes, with prices ranging from $50 for a 2 – 3 foot tall little sequoia to $135 for a 6 – 7 ft tall blue cedar. Just pick a tree and delivery date! Once the holidays are over, The Living Christmas Co. will pick your tree back up. And if you develop a bond with your tree — it is like a real live pet, after all — you can rent that same tree again next year and watch it grow!
The Living Christmas Co. points out that its trees are healthier not just for the planet, but also for you — since live trees clean indoor air and are less likely to catch on fire. In addition to the trees, the eco-company also has a holiday e-store with LED lights, recycled ribbons, fair trade ornaments, and more.
Prefer to touch and smell a tree before welcoming it into your home? Then get to the Sunday Santa Monica Farmers’ Market at 2640 Main St., Santa Monica, where The Living Tree will be hanging out from 9:30 am – 1 pm every Sunday through Dec. 20, 2009.

I read about this yesterday and thought it was a great idea. I wish they had something like this in Philly.
I would probably lose my deposit though due to destruction by kitties ;-)

Well it seems to be a trend that’s spreading — albeit v. slowly. Maybe it’ll get to Philly next year!
