The Valley Bikery: A New bicycle co-op gets baked

Posted by Siel in bicycle, de-car-ing, losangeles, valley (Wednesday September 16, 2009 at 12:01 pm)

Cyclists in the Valley: You now have your own bicycle co-op! After 5 months of meetings and mobile clinics, the Valley Bikery is now officially open to all who want to learn some DIY fix-it skills, volunteer their know-how, or just meet other neighborhood bike-enthusiasts.

You may have seen the Valley Bikery’s mobile clinic at at Balboa Park, the Studio City farmer’s market, or L.A. River Ride. Now, the co-op’s found a permanent spot within the Valley Bicycles bike shop in Chatsworth. Like Bikerowave, Bicycle Kitchen, and Bike Oven, Valley Bikery basically gives the community tools and training to be self-sufficient cyclists.

Drop by, and you can get hands-on help from the volunteers (a.k.a. bakers) and buy low-cost bike parts you need. Cost: $5 suggested per-hour donation — though no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The Valley Bikery also plans to keep doing the mobile clinics — as well as provide a spoke card service if you need bike-favors and promotions for your next cycling event. Beginner bike rides and commuter support programs are also in the works — so volunteer your time or donate the many items on the Bikery’s want list (web designer isn’t on the list, but they need one of those too, IMHO) to help your local bike co-op get its wheels wet.

The Valley Bikery. 21112 Devonshire St., Chatsworth. Hours: Tues., 2 pm – 6 pm; Wed., 1 pm – 5 pm; Sat., 1 pm – 5 pm.

  1. Nice! There are so many cyclists in the Valley–this will be a great resource, I’m sure!

  2. I did hear from Zach at LAist (who lives in the Valley) that unfortunately this Chatsworth location is not v. easy to get to — not near rail line, etc. Hopefully they can find a more amenable space soon –

  3. Three blocks from Metro Rail. Check the maps.

  4. By “Metro Rail,” do you actually mean Metrolink, which — granted is actually a rail line but — is totally different system with its own unique fares? Or am I missing something?
