Trader Joes in Chicago, or nomad decisions

Posted by Siel in chicago (Friday July 27, 2007 at 11:29 am)

Trader Joes in Chicago are just like the ones in LA — except the aisles are like twice as wide.

And Two Buck Chuck costs 3 bucks –

One of the best reasons for staying in California is for the Californian wines — though I wonder why Cali wines aren’t as cheap in Cali as French wines are in France –

It’s balmy and beautiful here right now.

My friend Anne, whose apt I’m crashing at, seems to love it here.

And this time around, Chicago seems to have more Asian peeps on the street than I saw last time –

But if I moved outta LA, I’d still move to NYC, hands down –

If you had to move out of LA, where’d you go?

  2. Yeah, it took me a year to get used to narrow grocery aisles when we moved to California.

If not LA (and not Sf), then Vancouver! Or else London.

  3. Seattle or Portland!

  4. Seattle, Portland, maybe Eugene–and if I were leaving the West Coast, maybe Colorado.

In addition to California, I’ve lived in Texas (San Antonio and Austin), New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. They’re all good.

  5. Portland probably, but possibly back to Chi (lived there for 3 years). And I’d love to live in NYC too.

Too many choices… maybe that’s why I keep moving every other year!

  6. Wife and I just decided to move to Minnesota to get away from the pervasive disgustingness of LA: pollution (good god, the pollution! Wake up and run for your lives people!), raunch culture, vile torture-porn movie billboards, etc. Plus, they actually have weather and seasons in Minnesota. We’re just not sun people.

  7. yes, there is such a thing as too much sun, took me a while to get used to sun every day when I moved here from Pittsburgh, PA, oh I think 8 years ago now. Funny people are saying Portland, because that town’s been on my mind…but the rain?? I am seriously thinking of moving within the next year and this is a BIG question on my mind. I find that most are afraid to move, for fear they won’t be happy where they are at, and afraid they’ll never be able to afford to move back.

Siel, your descriptions of Chicago, made me interested…but I’ve been there and know all about “that wind”.

  8. What is wrong with you people KenM and Kim (and I’m only half kidding) — Sun is wonderful! :P) In fact I couldn’t live in San Fran cuz it’s too fucking cold up there –

Ethnic diversity’s v. important to me, so that rules out a lot of places — for ex even SF’s just not as culturally diverse as LA –

  9. The TJs in Chicago are all in fairly transit-hostile locations as well (or at least the ones that were open when I was living there).

If I had to move out of L.A., I think my picks would be either Mexico City or New Orleans. I suppose I could live in Chicago again (I was born and raised there, after all), but I definitely prefer L.A.

  10. The TJ I went to had buses pretty much circling it it and was also not too far from the redline stop.

  11. I feel compelled to respond since i was mentioned in here!! i do love chicago! and the wind isn’t that bad – in fact, i think it’s only the 17th windiest city in the us! Siel – you will have to come back to hit up green zebra, etc.!! and you’re right, the TJ’s aisles are insanely wide – but the one i go to is right downtown – v. “transit friendly”.
