Travel green to the Blogger Beach Cleanup!

This post’s by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA:

Blogger Beach Cleanup 1While I sadly probably won’t be attending this year’s Blogger Beach Cleanup (Siel’s note: Damien’s a new father) , Siel was nice enough to allow me to pitch in by helping folks by providing non-car options to get to the meeting point at Ocean Front Walk. Before we get into this, I should add I am not an expert on moving around Santa Monica, so if you have a better plan or idea than I do, than by all means, please fill up the comments section.

By Transit:

Metro Line 33/333 runs all the way from Downtown Los Angeles on Venice to Main Street in Santa Monica.  It can drop you off at the corner of Main and Ocean Park Boulevard which would put you about 800 feet from the start.  Here’s the 33/333 schedule, and here’s an example google map that shows how to get from my house to the cleanup using this method.

The Big Blue Bus’ line 2 runs even closer than the Metro. If you live in Santa Monica, Culver City or the West Side,  see how to connect to the 2 Line on this BBB System Map, then hop on and get off at Ocean Front on Bernard.

By Bike:

Of course, my favorite mode of transportation is the bicycle.  While one can ride a bicycle on any street that they want to in Santa Monica, not all streets are created equal when it comes to bicycle safety and, Santa Monica does have a decent bicycle infrastructure which is well-mapped on google maps and can be found here.

I can’t say I’m well versed in riding in Santa Monica, when I ride there I’m usually in a group, but if one is coming from the North your best bet is to come down Ocean Boulevard until it turns into Neilson then turn west until you hit Ocean Avenue.  Keep going South until Ocean turns into Barnard, and you’re one block away from the start.

On foot:

If you live close enough to walk without making a day of it, you’re probably in a better position to give directions than I am.  However, if you are just looking to extend your day and have a nice walk before or after the clean up, I would say use either  BBB lines 1 or 7 to get to the Pier, then follow the Ocean Front Walk South for just under a mile.  See the map of the walk here, and a map of the BBB’s routes here.
