Tuesday questions

Posted by Siel in questions (Tuesday March 7, 2006 at 7:27 pm)

A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.

For those of you living in the US — If your state followed South Dakota’s example, would you leave the country?

  1. No. I’d leave South Dakota though. Then again, I’d leave South Dakota even if it was the most pro-choice state in the union. What an awful bunch of people.

BTW, most of what I’ve read on this indicates that it’ll go all the way to the Supreme Court and the justices there will refuse to hear it. Thus, the appellete decision will stand (against S.D. law and in favor of Roe). This is, of course, over the next couple of years and what with 87-year-old Justice Kennedy nearing retirement (or death) Bush has perhaps yet another opportunity to pander to wingnut country and appoint another Alito.

Absolutely worth keeping an eye on. We’ve never been closer to nullifying Roe. If they did that, I’d leave.

  3. I did a pre-emptive leaving of the country when I foresaw all this crap going down 5 years ago.

I wouldnt recommend everyone leave the country, but it would be cool to see the migration paths… leaving shitty states… I think it’s understandable… pity for the state, but maybe necessary to ensure your own quality of life.

  6. No, I would stay in the state and do whatever I could to aid women in *illegally* exercising their rights to control their bodies.

I would also work with others to pressure legislators to require/fund (and raise public awareness about): sex/health/pregnancy prevention education in schools; birth control options for women and men; insurance coverage for prenatal care, children’s health and maternal health (especially for low-income women); more social services for families (particularly for child abuse and neglect); and any other relevant services that are *pro*-after-you’ve-been-born-*life*.

  7. (Me again.) I just got this call to action from NARAL c/o Mother Jones – click on this link to send a message to your Gov urging him or her not to approve any anti-choice legislation in light of South Dakota’s abortion ban:

  8. james — I doubt that Starbucks has a pro-life policy… Mainly cuz the mermaid’s v. much a blue company…

Jasmin — But what about the latest elections in Canada? Still wanna go there :o

I think I’d have to leave, cuz sex as a whole might get v. doom & gloom. What if I accidentally got pregnant? I’d feel I had no personal agency –
