A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.
Has anyone here tried blue agave nectar?
This is the info I’ve found out about blue agave nectar so far. Apparently, it’s some kind of sweetener.
But has anyone tried it? If so, do you recommend it?
Wondering, mainly cuz Wholesome Sweeteners, which has brought fair trade sugar into the mainstream, also offers blue agave nectar. Which makes me curious –
Update, 12/28/06: Sweet Cactus Farms also offers organic agave nectar :)

Not sure if “blue agave” is different than straight up agave nectar, which I use all the time, LOVE it as a sweetener. It has a wonderful flavor, very sweet, kinda mapley/smokey, I use it in tea, baking, or sometimes drizzled on toast w/ a nut butter, yum.

I went to a bakery in NYC last time I was there called Babycakes and they use agave nectar instead of sugar or honey for their baked goods. It was tasty - I couldn’t tell the difference.

I have agave nectar as well. Many vegans used it because there’s no chance of it being processed with bone-char like sugar. It tastes good, is easy to measure, and I believe it’s more sustainably produced than sugar.
I noticed after I bought mine that there are different grade, like maple sugar - light, dark, and regular. I suppose it’s due to how much the original nectar is processed.

Thanks for the info girls! I’ll pick some up the next time I’m at Co-opportunity — thinking of using it in tea –

I drink “Tequiza” a beer that has the Blue Agave Nectar in it. I drink it for medicinal purposes as it seems to clear my mind if I’m scattered. I haven’t tried it as a sweetener, but am looking into other medicinal purposes it may have.
