A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.
What movie — released recently and still in theaters — do you recommend?
My recent faves:
A Scanner Darkly — If I could, I’d try Substance D, just to see what it’s like.
Quinceanera – A glimpse into the gritty LA world almost never covered in films
In Between Days — My friend Nicky talked me into watching this one. A poignant look into what a Korean-American girl goes through while coming of age.
Wordplay — This film about crossword puzzles and the people who love them was more engaging and artistically inspiring than I expected — and not just cuz John Stewart’s in it…
I’m planning to see Little Miss Sunshine this week, but if you’ve got other recommendations, lemme know –

wind that shakes the barley. winner of the palm do’or if it gets to you in LA. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460989/

A Scanner Darkly is definitely a film that has Philip Dick’s fingerprints on it. If you want what is considered to be one of the best films in this subgenre check out Blade Runner (1982). It is set in Los Angeles in the year 2015 (I think) and stars Ford and Young.
Unfortunately, Who Killed the Electric Car didn’t screen here, so I’ll have to wait until it appears on Netflix. Not related, do you have the problems I have with Netflix here? I don’t know what is wrong with the Post Office, but I get long delays in shipping and then damaged envelopes. I wish Vongo was better. Then I could beam all my films over the net.
Keep us posted on Greg Kinnear’s latest work.
