Tuesday questions: DIY window cleaner

Posted by Siel in environment, questions (Tuesday June 26, 2007 at 10:15 am)

Your turn to help me –

Making one’s own cleaning products sounds super easy, but I’ve had some probs. I tried making window cleaner — but it didn’t work too well cuz it required lemon juice — and my fresh lemon juice was just to pulpy.

In general, I’m v. motivated to DIY, but am not actually v. good at it.

However, I found this new, lemon juice-free recipe for window cleaner on Care2, courtesy of the Worsted Witch:

1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
spray bottle

But now I have a new question: WTF is liquid detergent? Laundry detergent? Dishwashing liquid? Soapy water? Someone help me out.

Also, what sort of vinegar? I’m guessing red wine vinegar’s not the best idea, but maybe it is! I dunno. So let me know –

I’m all set on the water and spray bottle part, btw –

  1. Use white distilled vinegar. And for detergent, you can just squeeze in some dish soap. :)

Vinegar with some water works really well for me, too. I used crumpled-up newspapers to get the shine.

  2. My wife swears by white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Me, I just use dish soap for just about everything.

  3. I think apple cider vinegar is the preferred choice in many of these home recipes. I used to make them years ago –oatmeal face masks and cucumber eye pads were favorites. Fun!

My friend is fostering a dog and we had fun making
a dog shampoo this weekend–beats the expensive ones at PetCo. You can find the recipe all over the web. Basically, glycerine (buy at pharmacy), dish soap (Dawn, Ivory, etc.) water, and apple cider vinegar.

  4. Since it says detergent and not soap I would have to assume dish soap. It is usually very mild. You could also use a natural castile soap like Dr. Bronners.

  5. Lisa: Apple cider vinegar is good for homemade skin- and haircare formulas, but doesn’t work as well for cleaning. You want white distilled vinegar for that, which is also cheaper :)
