I don't know anything about your local situation but I can tell you about our experience when we had BOTH. Our business needs once warranted this redundancy and so we got HotBricks (double WAN) and two ISPs, one DSL and one Cable. DSL tended to be less reliable and slower. We don't know how bad it was because we only noticed on those occasional times when the cable ISP had an interruption. Oh, and we had an intern with VISTA who couldn't connect through the Hotbrick so he had to run a line to the DSL modem. Our quirky home office setup meant that he had to get up and go to the living room to reset the DSL modem several times a day.

We've got Time Warner cable in northern Santa Monica. Generally pretty reliable, although it helped to switch to OpenDNS since we'd periodically hit issues with their DNS service. Verizon FiOS is "coming" to Santa Monica, but I have yet to see any physical evidence or get any response from the sign up to get info on when it's available.

I've never had good experiences with DSL, but cable has always been pretty good.

It depends on who will provide the cable service. If it's Time Warner stay far away. They keep trying to impose a monthly download limit of 45 GB, which is really not much at all.

I had cable a while back and don't really remember if there was a speed difference between the two - the only reason I used cable in the first place is was the only high speed access in my neighborhood at that time.

Have you tried calling Verizon and asking them about the speed issues? I'm usually pretty successful when I call them.

I've only had cable, and the internet service is great, but I hate Time-Warner. I feel like they are always out to make my life difficult - random rate hikes, annoying customer service. Ugh.

I've tried both DSL and cable in the past and I've had better experiences with cable. Not many system outages and haven't had an issue with the shared bandwidth.
