A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.
The Mut conundrum continues. So far, I’ve replaced the engine computer and put in an alarm system to mitigate further thefts before I sell the car.
Then yesterday, I drove down to Carmax — which said that my car’s in great condition for its age — then offered me $1,000 bucks for it. The Kelley Blue Book value’s $3300. So I said I’d think about it and left.
I have 2 questions:
1. Is there a mysterious, yet unknown car program that might let me lend my car out to someone who’s willing to pay the insurance and maintenance (i.e. oil change) on it for a month or few while I decide if I can adjust to car-free living? Okay — I think that’s a program that exists only in a Siel fantasy — but I had to ask just in case….
2. Assuming the fantasy scenario above won’t happen — Since it looks like I’m selling the damn thing on my own — wondering if you have any LA-specific advice that goes beyond what I got from eHow. I’m mostly concerned about safety issues, i.e. getting in the car with a stranger for the test drive. Anyone have “a girl’s guide to selling her car” type advice?

Nothing wrong and everything right with asking to hold their driver’s license and having a friend or two along with you. And then everyone goes for a ride. Go get a cup of coffee, whatever.
You don’t have to be paranoid to make sure you’re not chumped (and pepper spray isn’t being paranoid).

Good idea. I should def. ask friends to help out for the test drives. Thanks for the suggestion :)
