Your turn to help me –
If I lived in Hollywood and could spare $15 for a Tuna Tataki salad every day, it’s quite possible I’d make M Cafe de Chaya a daily lunch haunt.
But I live in Santa Monica, and I’m a grad student. And a daily $15 lunch would really cramp my happy hour style.
My friend Hannah, whom I had lunch with, sez that the salad’s all about the dressing. I’m of the opinion that it had something to do with the tuna too, but whatevs.
In any case — I hear salad dressings’re really cheap and easy to make. Thus: I’m interested in your fave salad dressing recipe, especially the kind that might imitate the spicy tanginess of M Cafe’s ponzu dressing.

Just pour balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and ponzu over the salad and tossing with salt & pepper. :) that’s the simplest dressing i always use.

following up on m’s suggestion, try starting out with 3 parts olive oil to 1 part vinegar, then adjust to taste. my latest fave is minced shallot with red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt & pepper. if you go to the wed sm farmers’ market, pick up some lettuce greens from windrose farms, and green beans and cherry tomatoes from harry’s berries. halve the tomatoes and let it sit w/ the shallot/vinegar/oil/salt/pepper for awhile, then add the greens and blanched beans. the sweetness of the tomato permeates the dressing. really good!

You guys are amazing. Okay — I might have to have a salad dressing tasting night to evaluate these –
I actually have no idea what ponzu is. I thought it was a made up word or something. Off to google –
