Tuesday questions: Sprouting paper

Posted by Siel in questions (Tuesday July 1, 2008 at 3:43 pm)

Your turn to help me –

So I got a wine tag in my shwag bag from the Visionary boutique opening. Said tag contained seeds, and promised to sprout wildflowers if planted.

Below is the before picture, taken a lil while after planting. I was going to take an after picture, but it’s been a few weeks and the pots look exactly as they did in the before picture, plus a few fallen leaves.

While I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m a frequent plant-killer, I’m wondering if these seeded papers — which have gotten quite popular and are often used in eco-packaging — actually ever sprout what they’re supposed to sprout.

Have you ever successfully grown things from seed-embedded paper?

  1. Remember giving me the massage oil? I tried planting half the packaging and water it for two weeks to no avail. I still have a whole bunch more of the package left as it was rather large and my pots are rather small.

  4. They probably aren’t viable, but… How deep did you plant the seeds/paper? If I remember correctly, the rule of thumb is that you want the seed to be about as deep as 4 times the shortest (flatest) dimension of the seed. So, for that paper, you probably want it just barely covered with soil… maybe just wet some of the paper and see if the seeds grow at all (leave it on a plate overnight – wet enough to stay wet, but not submerged)… see if they sprout at all.
When I get those papers I don’t plant them, because they don’t tell you what the seeds are… how do you know it won’t grow into something invasive? Full sun or partial shade or ?

  5. I get the invasive fear, but dude — it was in a pot :P

I’ll try the petri dish-esque tactic next time though.

  6. I actually received a card like this a while ago. Apparently the secret is to soak the card in water, let the seeds separate from the water, then plant them. I have a fabulous basil plant as a result :)

  8. I have never had luck with sprouting paper either…and I’ve managed to grow lots of things. Next time I’ll try soaking first.
