A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.
Going to Washington DC next weekend, for just a day. I’ve never been to DC; if you have, what do you suggest I do in the few hours of free time I’ll have?
Mainly interested in yummy coffee shops, restaurants, and bars –

Go to the Smithsonian. You won’t really be able to do much in a few hours (especially given that the Smithsonian comprises I don’t know how many museums).
Or I suppose Georgetown is a bit more English-major oriented with all the bookstores and shit.
That’s what I hit the last time I was in DC (which, I’m realizing was 16 years ago).

The Smithsonian is a good idea. Also, there will still probably be cherry blossoms around the tidal basin – that’s pretty.
For restaurants and bars and such, I guess I’d recommend the stretch from Dupont Circle up through Adams Morgan. (I was particularly in love with a chain of bakeries called Firehook that had AMAZING cookies. There’s one just off the circle.) Everyone in my family was in LOVE with Lebanese Taverna, a restaurant on Connecticut Ave. just south of the Zoo (also near Dupont and A-M).
Call me if you want more deets.

Go to the Museum of the American Indian, see the museum and eat in the cafeteria which has wonderful Native American food. The menu is a ecology lesson in how Native Americans made wonderful foods out of native plants, fish, animals etc.

i’ll second the Museum of the American Indian cafeteria and Firehook cookies.
Zaytinya: tasty and fun place. Turkish mezze (lots of little plates) http://www.zaytinya.com/
also in DuPont Circle-Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe – fun place to hang out, not sure about the fair trade/organic status of the coffee

For yummy coffee shops, I’d recommend firstly Sidamo, on 4th and H NE. They are out of Harar until the next harvest most likely, but they have fantastic coffee that they get from the Oromia cooperative. Tryst is also a kicka$$ coffee shop, which also happens to have a full bar and comfy couches and is on 18th st in Adams Morgan.
Wonderland is one of the best local bars in the area. I quite highly recommend. But for the comeraderie, not the food. They also don’t open until 5 pm. They’re at 11th and Kenyon NW.
Busboys and Poets has good food, coffee, and politics all rolled into one, replete with comfy couches – at U st and… 14th I think?
If you want more specific suggestions feel free to email me what you’re looking for.

I second “Busboys & Poets” – I went there when I was in town with CODEPINK a while ago.
It’s a shame that I have no idea where the cool tea shops and Thai restaurants I went to are – I hooked up with a local guy while on the peace protest, and he took me around instead. I highly recommend THAT method for the non-committed.
