Unwired organic cotton bra: Great to wear with organic T-shirts

Posted by Siel in fashion, organic (Tuesday January 27, 2009 at 2:16 pm)

Need a good, functional everyday eco-friendly bra to go with your organic cotton T-shirt? I recommend the Unwired Back Closure Bra.

Made by Intimate health by Christina, this Unwired bra’s made of 90% Swiss organic cotton and 10% spandex. As you may have guessed, this bra has no metal underwire. Instead, it has a more flexible underwire-esque support that’s sturdy but won’t dig into you.

The cups are lightly padded and smooth, which makes the bra perfect to wear with T-shirts. I’ve had mine for about a year — I got it after writing my roundup on green bras — and so far, it’s held up well.

The one downside: Unwired bras are made in China — which seems to be true for all functional everyday eco-friendly bras I’ve looked into. (There’s some eco-lingerie that’s made in the U.S. or in Europe, but those are more for special occasions.)

Choose from black or natural. The Unwired Back Closure Bra‘s on sale right now at Gaiam for $21.99. A front-closure version‘s available too for the same price.

  1. The problem with this bra is that anyone above a certain size, would never ever be able to wear it.

  2. Doesn’t that go for most bras?

  3. Great post! I used it as a starting point for my own upcoming post on the environmental blog Super Eco. Here’s what I’m wondering: how comes all organic bras only come in black or “natural”? Shouldn’t organic bras come in green?

  4. The technology exists to make beautiful and excellent supporting bras. They are called “cut and sew balconet (or balconette) bras and the best ones are from France or the UK.
Life is miserable for a woman with large breasts, which includes many small women, such as myself, unless she finds a really well-made, good-fitting bra.
Now, here is the problem: what if said lady is also experiencing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity syndrome and finds that she cannot tolerate such materials as lycra (spandex, elastane), nylon (polyiadimide), and the many incarnations of polyester? I’ll tell you what: X%$()_*+!, that’s what!
If these greenies are serious they need to get real about meeting the real needs of real people.
I care about Mother Earth, especially that piece of Her called Me. That particular piece has to be taken care of before I can go running around doing all these things to help all the other assorted pieces.
So, Greenies, if you want me to take you seriously, then you take me seriously first.

  5. Jonathan — Your comment made me laugh :) I think the reason many organic bras come in neutral colors is because they’re the most popular ones. As organics get more popular, I’m sure they’ll come out with more colors :)
