How I’m voting for the environment on Nov. 7, 2006: Judicial positions. Here’s how I’m voting on state-level positions, city-level positions, and the propositions.
At the moment, we have a California Supreme Court that’s composed of all Republicans and just one Democrat, Justice Carlos Moreno.
Associate Justice Joyce L. Kennard: Yes.
Joyce is actually being opposed by California Republican Assembly because, back in 1997, she joined in an opinion striking down a statute requiring girls under 18 to obtain parental consent to, or judicial authorization of, abortions. Of course, as a gal opposed to parent consent laws, this only makes me like Joyce more. Joyce was previously a deputy attorney general and Los Angeles Superior Court judge. She’s been a Supreme Court Justice since 1989.
Associate Justice Carol A. Corrigan: No Vote, for now.
A centrist Republican (see SF Chronicle), Carol actually used to be a Democrat. I just can’t decide on this one, cuz — in a court composed of almost all Republicans — Corrigan is at least a centrist. She was appointed by Schwarzenegger to replace the super-conservative Janice Rogers Brown. However, I don’t even like Democrat centrists. I’d love to get more input on this one, but as of now, it’s a no vote for me.
