Vote! June 3, 2008

Posted by Siel in feminist/politics,losangeles (Monday June 2, 2008 at 11:34 pm)

Here’s how I’m voting tomorrow. Usually I have more deets about the candidates and the positions they’re running for, as well as the reasons why I’m supporting or not supporting them, but due to time constraints, it’s all been squeezed into one short post.

I relied more on endorsements this time around than I ever have, mainly due to the judges and the party central committee members who were difficult to get info about. I did give the other candidates and propositions more thought than presented here — I just didn’t have time to write out my reasoning, but wanted to at least point out some key enviro endorsements….

U.S. Representative, 30th District: Henry A. Waxman (unopposed, and I voted for him in 2006 too)

State Senator, 23rd District: Fran Pavley (endorsed by the Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, California Now, California Nurses Association, California Medical Association)

I got way more mail from Fran Pavley than anyone else, BTW (proof above). The woman may be an environmentalist, but she sure goes through a helluva lotta post-consumer recycled paper.

Lloyd Levine sent me the second-highest number of flyers (right), but he sent less than half what Fran did –

State Assembly Member, 41st District: Julia Brownley (unopposed, and I voted for her in 2006 too)

LA County Democratic Party Central Committee, 41st District: Maureen Cruise, Julie Lopez Dad, Ralph Erickson, Leah Herzberg, Margie Lee Murray, Dolores Press, Dorothy Reik

I couldn’t find much information beyond what’s on the League of Women Voters of California website — which only helped me eliminate one candidate, Albert Abrams, who really seemed to lack experience working for the Democratic party in comparison to the other candidates.

The rest of the candidates all had endorsements from various local democratic groups, most of which I don’t know much about. In the end, I decided to go with the Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles’ endorsements, because I at least know and generally trust that group. For those concerned about the vote on the anti-gay marriage proposition in November, the Stonewall Democratic Club endorsed 3 candidates — all of whom PDA also endorsed.

More about what this committee does here.

Superior Court Judges: I’m planning to vote according to the LA County Democratic Party recommendations, mainly because researching these is just overwhelming for the individual. I’m also not quite sure if we should be voting on judges to begin with, especially when it’s difficult for voters to make an informed decision.

If you’d like, you can also check out the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s ratings and the L.A. Times’ endorsements. The latter endorses a different candidate than that LACDP on 4 races (Office 69, 84, 94, 154)

L.A. County District Attorney: Steve Cooley. He’s a Republican, but gets props for trying to reform the three-strikes law. The one Democrat running in this race — Albert Robles — was apparently not deemed “viable or qualified” by his own party, which chose not to endorse him. An independent, Steve Ipsen, is also running.

Prop 98: No (opposed by the Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, and the City of Santa Monica)

Prop 99: Yes (supported by the Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, and the City of Santa Monica)
