Vote! Los Angeles Superior Court

Posted by Siel in feminist/politics (Monday November 6, 2006 at 2:19 pm)

How I’m voting for the environment on Nov. 7, 2006: Judicial positions. Here’s how I’m voting on state-level positions, city-level positions, and the propositions.

Unlike the state-level judicial positions, we voters at least have a choice on most of these judicial positions.

155908570 df1547e0fa m Vote! Los Angeles Superior CourtOffice 8: Deborah Sanchez. Deborah, a supervising attorney in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, is my pick. The other candidate, Bob Henry, a California deputy attorney general, has gotten more endorsements — from both Republican and Democrat organizations, but his record of arguing to uphold death penalty cases bothers me.

Office 18: Daviann Mitchell. Daviann, a former police officer who now prosecutes gang crimes as LA deputy district attorney, has been recognized for outstanding investigation and prosecution of domestic violence cases. She’s endorsed by the LA Times. Her opponent, John C. Gutierrez is an administrative law judge who’s endorsed by LA County Democrats (PDF).

Office 102. No vote, for now. I’m not very taken with the conservative-sounding platform that Hayden Zacky, current deputy district attorney, is running on. However, his opponent, George C. Montgomery, was rated not qualified by the Los Angeles County Bar Association Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee, which also troubles me.

Office 104. Bobbi Tillmon. Bobbi, a Superior Court Commissioner, is running unopposed. She has the endorsements of the LA Times.

Office 144: Janis Levart Barquist. Janis, who has most of the Democratic orgs endorsement, seems to be more liberal than her opponent, deputy district attorney David W. Stuart.

  1. record of arguing to uphold death penalty cases bothers me.

Bothers you it should appal you. It is utterly evil for a state to execute anyone. If I could vote for a judge whether they supported the death penalty would be the single biggest decider in how I vote. If there was no non-death penalty candidates I would spoil my vote rather then endorse that barbarity
