How I’m voting for the environment in the Nov. 4, 2008 election.

No one likes Prop 10. Want proof? Check out this spreadsheet compiling endorsements from political parties, nonprofit organizations, newspapers, etc. (via LAist) Prop 10′s the only one without a single yes endorsement.
That’s despite the fact that Prop 10 has a deceptively eco-friendly-sounding title: “The California Renewable Energy and Clean Alternative Fuel Act.” Let’s hope every voter (or more realistically, at least a majority of the voters) reads beyond the title.
The problem with Prop 10: This initiative’s bankrolled by T. Boone Pickens, a billionaire with a natural gas company who’s thrown in a few mil to promote the initiative. If passed, Prop 10 would give huge rebates to people and companies that buy vehicles that run on natural gas, thereby lining Pickens’ pockets — by making Cali taxpayers fund $5 billion in bonds.
Now many environmental groups see natural gas as a transitional energy source at best — one that’s better than, say, coal, but not one that’s actually really clean, like solar or wind power. Yet Prop 10 gives the most money to natural gas vehicles! Electric and hydrogen cars get short shrift.
As you can imagine, every enviro group’s against this. Paul Scott of Plug In America, an advocacy org for electric cars, emailed to say his group opposes Prop 10, and added this:
By the way, Plug In America has taken a stand against Prop 10, but we saw this morning that a “Yes on 10″ group had listed PIA as a supporter! We demanded they remove our name and they did so immediately, but I wanted to tell you that the pro 10 people are sleazy.
Even the Republican Party doesn’t endorse further lining the pockets of this billionaire. Vote no on Prop 10.
