Twice-weekly green giveaways.

Today’s freebie is for the Santa Monica shopper who’s eager to check out the new Bloomingdale’s at the revamped Santa Monica Place mall — with reusable bags in hand, of course. One lucky winner will get not one, not two, but three reusable Bloomingdale’s bags — plus a gift certificate for a free Forty Carrots frozen yogurt at Bloomingdale’s. Redeem that gift certificate, and Bloomingdale’s Santa Monica will send $5 to local eco-nonprofit Heal the Bay!

All three bags were given to me at the media preview for Bloomingdale’s Santa Monica this morning. The biggest is a roomy, sturdier tote complete with a zipper that could be used as a weekend bag for a light shopper. A light cotton tote and an orange mesh bag will fit smaller items — like oranges from the nearby farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Does this mean the new Bloomingdale’s a green store? No — though the 101,000-square-foot, two-story store did make some greening efforts. The redesign retained some of the building’s original raw elements, with naked, stripped down columns bearing holes and markings from the past. Even the classic Bloomingdale’s black and white checkerboard floor design is stained directly onto the original concrete floor. And some decorative elements are upcycled; the colorful arrow below used to light up a carnival.

Eco-fashionistas won’t find many green outfits at Bloomingdale’s however. The two eco-options I spotted were Edun ready-to-wear fashions for men — and Tata Harper eco-friendly beauty products. But lines like Eileen Fisher and Alternative Apparel do offer some organic cotton options — some of which you may be able to find at Bloomingdale’s.

Want to win the reusable bags — and free yogurt? Comment by Tue., Aug. 10 to get into the drawing, which’ll happen Wed., Aug. 11 (more info on freebies here). Los Angeles-area addresses only. Bloomingdale’s Santa Monica opens its doors to the public on Aug. 6.

I’d love to win these! I must admit that I would use them for groceries instead of Bloomingdale’s, though ;-)

the real winner of these bags are the trees still standing, the less crowded landfills and the petroleum we leave in the earth. i’d be honored to tote these totes in order to preserve our resources and celebrate our planet.
