Twice-weekly green giveaways.

Want the plastic bag ban to go into effect in California? Today’s giveaway will get you ready for the ban — if you aren’t already. One winner will get a 5-pack of reusable bags in shapes and sizes to meet every purpose.
I got all five of these bags while at BlogHer ’10 — which makes me worry that companies are giving out way more reusable bags than are actually getting used. I certainly don’t need any bags — so I’m hoping one of you do!
The biggest is gigantic White House / Black Market tote made of recycled plastic bottles; the scratchiest is the BlogHer ’10 bag, a Freeset tote that’s fairly made out of jute. The rest of the collection isn’t as green, but include a regular-sized tote, a canvas tote with a zipper, and a tiny bag for tiny totables
Because some of the bags are too big, this freebie drawing will be limited to readers in the L.A.-area who can pick up the 5-pack. Comment by Tues., Aug. 23 to get into the drawing, which’ll happen Wed., Aug. 24 (more info on freebies here). And please heed the bag rule.

Why not. We only have one and always leave it in the wrong car or at home.

I have more than enough reusable bags, so don’t want to be entered in the contest, but I have an idea about “swag bags” in general. My idea was inspired by two bag factors: 1) I imagine that many people who don’t use reuseable bags don’t use them because they don’t have any or don’t want to buy one. 2) trade shows and conference probably have lots of leftover bags when the event ends. So I’ve been wondering if somehow a bag repository could be created, where people who want free reusable bags could get surplus ones from trade shows and etc. Sure, some people might not want a bag that says something like “Orthopedics 2010 Annual Meeting”, but other (like me) wouldn’t care (my shopping bags come from education conferences my father attended a while ago, so have advertising for school fund raising companies and etc.). Could something like this work? There are plenty of challenges — getting the bags, connecting people with bags, just to name two — but it might be worth thinking about.
