Wednesday freebies: Eddie Bauer waterproof sport binoculars

Posted by Siel in freebies (Wednesday January 27, 2010 at 9:19 am)

A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.

Eddie Bauer waterproof sport binocularsToday’s freebie is a pair of Eddie Bauer waterproof sport binoculars, which offer6x magnification and individual eye focus.

This outdoorsy prize comes courtesy of Summit on the Summit, the celeb-studded call to action to address the global clean water crisis. Earlier this month, Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch, and many more well-known faces and names climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness about — and money for — this cause. Eddie Bauer was one of the initiative’s sponsors — which means the celebs used binoculars just like this one as the tweeted their way up the as of now still snow-capped mountain.

While Summit on the Summit’s cause is very green, these binoculars really doesn’t have any eco-friendly features as far as I can tell — so if you win, you’ll have to make sure you put the backpack to a green cause — like birdwatching to track changes created by global climate change for scientists.

To win, comment by Tues., Feb. 2 answering this question: “How do you get your drinking water?” Do you drink straight from the tap? Use a filter? Or still buy disposable bottled water? The winner will be picked a week from today; US addresses only.

And if you’re a tweeter inspired to get involved with Summit on the Summit, check out the Twitter Toolkit. You can also sponsor a foot of the climb on the Summit on the Summit website by donating directly to the cause. All the funds raised will go towards The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Water For People’s Playpump Technology.

  1. We have a well so we get our water thru the tap straight from our well! It’s the sweetest, best tasting water I’ve ever had.

  2. I have been using a Brita filter for years. I’m very excited that you can now recycle your filters…though it’s somewhat of a pain. I have also used the Pur water filtration system. As far as the binoculars go, I’ve gotten into identifying birds, and a decent pair would go a long way to helping!

  3. We live in the Appalachian mountain range so we get our water from the well. Some great tasting water!

  4. We drink from the tap, however in our little town of about 1400 people, it is all well water here. Tastes great!

  5. I promise to use the binoculars to check out birds on the L.A. River! I live in Los Angeles’ Koreatown and I get my drinking water straight out of the tap. L.A. water is the finest that we can get from Owens Valley and elsewhere.

  6. so cool! As for my drinking water, it depends where I am. Home in Pasadena, I drink from the tap. Elsewhere in LA, if I didn’t bring my own bottle, I will get bottled/filtered water if I’m parched. Or I will just get something funkier that I couldn’t already have as a rare treat :)

  7. I had read about the Summit on the Summit!
I am a bird watcher and take bird counts with
a professor from the university near where we live!
These Eddie Bauer Binoculars would come in very handy for me. We use tap water in our home and I am seriously considering purchasing a filtered
    pitcher. Many thanks, Cindi

  8. Straight from the tap — getting water tested first is a good idea. Love Summit on the Summit… what a great way to raise awareness (both literally and figuratively). CHEERS! Lynn

  9. Straight from the tap. My water comes from the East Pasadena Water Company, and it tastes great. I read the annual report each year on what’s in the water, and for the most part it does quite well on the tests.

I’ve used filters when I lived in other parts of southern California, but I don’t find it necessary where I live now.

The binoculars would be great. I like to watch the cooper’s hawks when they’re up in our redwood tree, or the massive flock of green parrots that flies past the house every evening at sunset.

  10. Since Santa Monica MBTE problem, I’ve been refilling the big containers from the uber-filter water machines at the Coop (and many markets). I recently found that I can bike trailer two bottles, which is about 100 lbs!

  11. I bought a couple of the water filtering reusable water bottles…. they work great and if I have to drink straight out of the tap it is not bad. We live in a small town in Missouri.

  12. I get my water from the tap but use Brita filter pitcher. Here in Florida you can smell the tap water so filtration is a necessity. Lots of bird watching opportunities..Lots of Bald Eagles im my area. I keep up with local nesting and hatchlings.

  13. I drink my water straight from the tap. It depends on the day, but usuallly it tastes pretty good…

    Comment by Susannah — January 29, 2010 @ 6:26 pm

  14. This would be so awesome!

I get my water at home from the tap that is filtered through my refrigerator. At the office, we also have a filtered system that replaced our old, bottle-delivery system.

I have a reusable receptacle at home and the office and an environmentally friendly container for on-the-go!

  15. I still have no problem with drinking straight from the tap. I’m still alive, so it suits me just fine!

  16. i drink from the tap mostly. but i NEVER consume bottled water. not even when it’s free.

    Comment by debbiesnax — February 2, 2010 @ 9:45 am

  17. I filter my tap water and tote water to work in a stainless steel container. It’s not bad unfiltered either but my spoiled cat prefers the filtered.

  18. Brita Filter at home! but at work we have those big bottled water delivered once in a while.

    Comment by thor khov — February 2, 2010 @ 11:29 am

  19. Straight from the tap. I would like to get a filter – a portable one as some places the water is not so good or safe.

  20. Sarah (comment #1) is the lucky winner of the binoculars! Thanks everyone for entering — Who knew so many green LA girl readers had local wells!
