Wednesday Freebies: Favela Rising

Posted by Siel in freebies (Friday January 25, 2008 at 10:21 am)

A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.

I officially suck at getting freebies up on time. The good news: I’ll get the Friday freebie up later today, giving you 2 chances to win –

Today’s giveaway is an Ironweed Film Club copy of Favela Rising, a moving documentary about the transformative power of music and dance even in the bleakest of situations.

The film centers around Anderson Sa, a man from the slums — aka favelas — of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, where poverty, drug wars, and police brutality are a way of life. To create an alternative to the drug trade for the youth, Anderson and his friends found Grupo Cultural AfroReggae, a multi-pronged program that not only gives young people a creative outlet, but also employs artists, provides music and dance as alternative.

The program’s not simply an after school alternative for kids, or even just a source of employment for performers. More than that, AfroReggae seeks to participate in the creation and reclamation of culture, showing the world that the slums are not just a place of poverty and violence, but also a source of culture and creativity.

Comment or email by Sunday to get into the drawing, which happens Monday. US addresses only.

  1. Hello, It kind of reminds me of the movie “Stand and
Deliver!” A great movie based on truth. Please enter me in your contest for this movie. I believe that people should keep their culture and not change to exist in another one. Thanks, Cindi

  4. The soundtrack is great, but unfortunately that’s all I’ve had a chance to enjoy about this movie since I missed it when it was playing in theaters (not sure if it was even shown in AZ). Anyway, count me in for the drawing!
