I love Locali, the newish eco-convenience store in East Hollywood, but the shop’s totes are about the most uneco totes you can get.
These totes by Earthwise are made in china out of non-woven polypropylene — technically a recyclable, but difficult and costly to recycle, material.
I found it extremely odd that this was the bag a store very solidly focused on local, eco-friendly goodies — and keen on attracting customers who value those same things — decided to go with. Basically, these bags are only eco-friendly if you decide to consider anything that can be reused eco-friendly. Locali’s reason for buying these? They were cheap….

Hi, Not only does my family use these bags, but we try and give any gift that we give in a reusable bag. This past Christmas, everyone family member that we gave a gift received it in a reusable tote!

A few weeks ago, I read that for some, reusable totes often cost the environment more than the paper or plastic option. The carbon footprint required to make them is pretty high, plus, many times people forget their bags at home.
I’m sure this isn’t the case with all reusable totes, but you brought up an interesting observation about this particular store and the cost factor versus the environmental factor.

I am just starting to use reusable tote bags. The trouble is remembering to bring them into stores.
