Wednesday freebies: Manda Bala

A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.

3232859793 31eb590630 m Wednesday freebies: Manda BalaIn celebration of Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival, a new freebie will go up every day this week!

Today’s giveaway is a DVD copy of Manda Bala, a riveting documentary that weaves together a crazy web of poverty, crime, and political corruption in Brazil — beginning in a frog farm, of all places, and ending with the election of a politician despite his history of political scandals.

Unlike the average informative-but-kinda-boring documentary, Manda Bala has an edge-of-your-seat thriller feel. After all, it has all the elements of a mob film or cop drama: Organized crime, abducted women, guns and violence. Except in Manda Bala, everything’s real.

We meet a kidnapper who seems to care little about his victims but wants to improve living conditions in his impoverished neighborhood, a woman who got her ear cut off by kidnappers, a surgeon who invented new ways of recreating ears, a man concerned enough about crime and kidnapping to takes a course on driving a bulletproof car, and a powerful politician, Jáder Barbalho, who wins an election despite his connections to major political corruption scandals where $2 billion went missing, further impoverishing the Brazilian poor.

Manda Bala got banned in Brazil and won a Sundance Grand Jury Prize. Watch the trailer here:

  7. I’m Brazilian and lived in Rio as a child. I have family there, and they just say that it’s gone downhill, drastically, even since I last visited a few years ago. I know this would make my dad depressed, but I’m sure it would make him appreciate LA more….

  10. This looks interesting! I love learning about different areas of the world and I’m still mourning the loss of my super cable package with all the fun educational channels (why are they only offered on the really expensive package? boo!) so this would be really appreciated. Thanks for the giveaway!
