A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.
Just realized I forgot to do giveaways last week, so this week gets 4 freebies!
This one’s Nearly Human: The Gorilla’s Guide to Good Living, a cheeky book by former San Diego Zoo guy Andrew Y. Grant that asks, “how gorilla are you?”
We share 98% DNA with gorillas, and apparently, there’s a lot we could learn from them. For one, gorillas in the wild eat better than most of us; we’d do well to ape their diet, a little bit. The book even has a menu guide!
Nearly Human waxes lyrical about all things gorilla, from nonviolent parenting techniques to peaceful conflict resolution to interactive play, that humans could emulate. Other gorilla info’s less applicable to humans — i.e. a step-by-step illustrated guide to the 9-step chest beating display — if amusing.
The last chapter deals with the threats gorillas face due to deforestation, illegal poaching, human settlement and disease. To that end, a percentage of profits from the book goes to The Zoological Society of San Diego’s center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species.
Filled with trivia and stats about all different types of gorillas, Nearly Human’s an easy-to-read, well-illustrated book with largish print that’ll likely make a good gift for kids with an interested in wildlife.
Comment or email by Friday to get into the drawing, which happens Saturday. US addresses only.

Jane Goodall has always been an inspiration to me and my interest and love for Chimpanzees carries over into the whole world of apes/monkeys – Gorillas, Chimps, Orangs etc. I would love to read this and share with others! There is a lot we can learn from them – Thanks!
