Why so many hummers?

Posted by Siel in environment, losangeles (Sunday July 30, 2006 at 7:31 pm)

Googled “Hummer” today, and I’m psyched to see the Fuck You and Your H2‘s second on the search list, right after the Hummer site itself.

As you may know, I’m a big fan of FUH2 :)

I’m not so psyched to see these H3 billboards around town (left).

What up with that? Being a non-car-lover, I don’t really get what the diff between the H1 the H2 and the H3 are.

I’d like to think that these Hummer’s are getting, at the v. least, progressively smaller, but I’m not sure. Is the H3 smaller than the H2?

Update, 9/10/06: Hummers are actually illegal on most residential roads in LA — Find out more here.

  1. It’s certainly smaller than the H1. Even the biggest morons are slowly realising that a military vehicle is really not that good a fit for the road. Now we just need gas prices around $10, and watch out – there’s the compact Hummer! ;)

  2. I am amused by the emasculation ads that Hummer runs – about regaining your manhood. Guy is seen buying organic tofu as the next guy is buying meat chunks and beer. Then runs to the Hummer store to compensate.

  3. I saw an H3 commercial on TV last night, I can’t recall the details, but it showed a woman driving, and then went on to say it got 20+ MPG highway. Pretty annoying.

  4. I just found this site today, and it just cracked me up. It might not be for everyone, but here it is: I Humped Your Hummer http://www.ihumpedyourhummer.com/blog/category/video/

If you’re going to watch just one, watch “H2: Call on Me”.

  5. Rebecca — I love you for intro’ing me to this site! More for its manifesto than anything else — The manifesto begins:

“We believe placing a hummer in virtually any context—particularly in contemporary American society—unnecessarily militarizes otherwise neutral, benign public spaces. It is a gross display of power and unrighteous dominion to park a Hummer somewhere that would otherwise be occupied by something considerably more pleasant: a baby carriage, a flower box brimming with geraniums, a bench for the elderly to rest their weary joints. Our contention is with the way in which ordinary, unthreatening public areas are rendered hostile and aggressive by the imposition of a vehicle as large and militaristic as a Hummer.

The best way to challenge the legitimacy of such a political act is not to counter it with an equally rigid, forceful counterstrike, but rather to perform an equivalent de-politicizing or a-politicizing gesture.”

  6. Oh thank goodness! I’ve been nervous since posting it…that it was “out of line” or something. I thought it was funny and I too read their manifesto. Almost anything that gets people to pay attention, in my opinion, is a good thing. And if the right message can go viral, even better.

not only does it kick a$$ but it is organic cotton printed using a more environmentally friendly process, in the good ole USA.

  8. Ah Rebecca — Be not nervous :)

Alotta — I’d buy that T too — if not for my aversion to American Apparel. Still, kudos for you for going anti-hummer :)
