Will USC fulfill its fair trade promises?

Posted by Siel in caffeine (Sunday January 7, 2007 at 3:32 pm)

Back in December, USC students talked with the director of Hospitality Services at USC — John Thacker.

John said that fair trade coffee would be brewing at 2 of the most popular student coffee spots on the USC campus — Cafe 84 and Trojan Grounds — come first day of the spring semester, Jan. 8.

That means that tomorrow’s the test date.

All USC peeps reading this — Make sure you stop by Cafe 84 or Trojan Grounds tomorrow. Note whether or not there’s signage announcing the avaliability of fair trade coffee. Regardless, ask for fair trade coffee — and see how easily you can get it.

Most importantly, report back. You can email me directly at greenlagirl@gmail.com, or you can work through any of the student orgs in support of this issue: Oxfam-USC, SCALE (The Student Coalition Against Labor Exploitation), Environment First, or USC Volunteer Latin America.

More after Monday –

Update, 1/2007: USC is now serving fair trade coffee at Cafe 84 or Trojan Grounds, though they tend to “run out” once in a while.
