Yes, keep going to the farmers’ market

About those recent anti-local food articles popping up — perhaps expectedly in The Economist, and a lil less so on the NYT op-ed pages — Tom Philpott of Grist smartly picks them apart.

For ex, James E. McWilliams in the NYT op-ed argues New Zealand’s pasture-grown lamb’s less carbon-intensive than UK’s feed-fed lamb, therefore UKers should buy NZ lamb. Tom counters: “But pasture-based organic U.K. lamb exists and is available. Wouldn’t buying that be the greener option for U.K. consumers? The study doesn’t comment on this option — perhaps because, as Shuman points out, its authors are funded by New Zealand agribusiness interests that rely on export markets.”

Tom’s whole piece is a great read. So reject the organic lettuce from China vs. conventional lettuce from US dichotomies, and just get organic lettuce from your nearest farmers’ market.

In Cali, local organic options aren’t too hard to find. The Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, btw, has all sorts of local, grass-fed meats — including bison!
